Working Together to Safeguard Children

Our school is committed to safeguarding children and promoting children's welfare and expects all staff, governors, volunteers and visitors to share this commitment and maintain a vigilant and safe environment. Everyone has a responsibility to act without delay to protect children by reporting anything that might suggest a child is being abused, or neglected, or is at risk.

All those who come into contact with children in our school, whether paid, voluntary or whilst working on site, have a duty to safeguard and promote the welfare of our children. We have expectations of behaviour and responsibilities of all adults whilst at St Joseph's.

All staff and visitors to school must sign in at the front desk. All staff and visitors must wear identification at all times. All staff (including agency, sports coaches, music etc) and volunteers must have a valid DBS background check. Evidence of these checks are kept on our Single Central Register.

St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School is a safe, happy space for our pupils. They are free from discrimination, harassment, bullying and abuse. This includes peer on peer, from adults, online and from contextual, external factors. We will not tolerate or ignore potential risk of harm.

We expect any staff, volunteer or visitor to act without delay if they have reason to believe a child is at risk of harm - they must inform a member of the Safeguarding team of their concerns.

Operation Encompass

In conjunction with Merseyside Police, St Joseph’s is involved in an initiative called ‘Operation Encompass.’ The purpose of Operation Encompass is to safeguard and support children and young people who have been involved in, heard or witnessed a domestic abuse incident. Following such an incident, children can arrive at school distressed, upset, worried and unprepared. Operation Encompass aims to ensure that appropriate school staff (called Key Adults) are made aware early enough to support children and young people in a way that means they feel safe and included.

At St Joseph’s our Key Adult is Mr Turner

This is a valuable initiative that means we can continue to support and help children and families within our school community when they need it the most. You can find our more by visiting www.operationencompass.org
